Observation Narrative
Plot location: ridge spur between two ravines, 0.4 miles SSE of Hyco River bridge on US58.
The site is a convex, dry-mesic, middle-slope interfluve between two ravines. Forest vegetation here probably regenerated from logging several decades ago. The stand is hickory-rich, with three Carya spp. Sharing overstory dominance with Quercus alba, Q. rubra, Q. stellata, and Q. velutina. Unlike many oak-hickory forests on mafic substrates, the herb layer of this stand is remarkable and dominated by scrambling vines of Vitis rotundifolia.
